Origins of poured-in-place rubber surfaces
The concept of rubber paving began in western Canada in the early 90s
There’s two types of poured-in-place rubber installs and both have different origins. Poured-in-place rubber surfacing with EPDM granules have started in Europe since 1950 approximately and first appeared in the United States in the late 80ies. However, the rubber paving concept started in western Canada in the early 90ies.
Poured-in-place rubber surfacing: a safer alternative for playgrounds and athletic tracks.
Pour in place EPDM rubber surfacing was first installed on running tracks in Europe in the early 50ies and the product got popular since it was a safer alternative, being less harsh on the body and knees especially. Afterwards, the Europeans started installing it on playground surfaces for kids, which has decreased injury rate quite a bit since it is softer and more hygienic than sand or woods chips.
